Creativity and me …
I have always had a desire to create something from nothing. As a child, I loved making paper flowers with my mother, using bright colored paper, transforming them into a variety of beautiful flowers. Around the age of ten, I learned to crochet and again, it fulfilled my desire to create. When I started college, I soon discovered that art was my favorite class. An Art Degree was in my future. Growing up in “God’s country” (West Virginia), I was surrounded by the beauty of nature. I married soon after college, and my husband joined the Air Force. My love for nature grew during my travels as an Air Force wife. Living in many states, and even other countries, gave me the opportunity to experience the uniqueness of each place, seeing the beauty all around me. It strengthened my desire to create. My career as a Training and Curriculum Specialist in Early Childhood for the Air Force gave me the opportunity to see creativity through the eyes of children. I observed firsthand how children explore and create in their own way, without any worry about the final product. This gave me the confidence to approach my own art with the same freedom. My love of the process is a big part of how I approach each one of my unique art pieces.

A blank canvas and some paint… The Journey Begins

A blank canvas calls to me and says fill me with your love, your creation. I love abstract art. It doesn’t matter what medium I use, my process is the same—just put something on the canvas and go from there. It might be the colors, the texture or just my need to paint that sparks creativity. My heart and mind tell my hands what to do, and I embrace the mystery of what will come next. I paint freely from my connection to the individual piece. I add dimension to my work with a variety of materials. I seek harmony between the materials and the subject matter. If a painting doesn’t hit that sweet spot for me, I put it away for a while, placing it where I can easily see it. I don’t know when that ‘a-ha’ moment will come, but when it does, I start seeing the piece with a different eye and the creative process starts anew. Something inside me makes me reach for the end product. It is as if the piece of work speaks to me, at some point saying, “I am whole.” In my heart, I know that the painting is what it was meant to be and the journey is complete.
The movement of colors and the composition of my Fluid Acrylic Art draws the eye to the abstract composition. Colors mingling together forming a unique pattern and design with my perspective shining through. By manipulating the direction in which the paint flows, I begin to see a one-of-a-kind painting emerge. As I proceed, my inner voice tells me when the painting is complete. The love of the experience gives me the freedom to create without a predetermined outcome.
